Cet appel à aller aux périphéries, s’il est adressé à tous les chrétiens l’est aussi à ceux qui sont chargés symboliquement d’être les pasteurs du troupeau, à savoir les prêtres.
On aimerait peut-être que ceux-ci restent dans leurs presbytères ou leurs sacristies attendant que les fidèles viennent à eux. Cette image, si elle est un brin caricaturale, fonctionne de moins en moins aujourd’hui à l’heure où le glas de la civilisation paroissiale a sonné. Il ne faut pas s’y tromper pour autant. « Aller aux périphéries », ce n’est ni une échappée exotique qui serait devenue tendance ni une soumission naïve au monde présent. Jean-Christophe, Guillaume, Guy, Frédéric, Hervé, Bruno et d’autres encore ont choisi de devenir prêtre, préférant au col romain ou à la soutane les habits des hommes de tous les jours pour être envoyés dans ces lieux là. Envoyés afin d’annoncer sans bruit la beauté du Royaume qui y germe, discrètement, réellement, nul ne sait comment. Ce sont des prêtres de la Mission de France, auquel Chantal Joly consacre un ouvrage : « Des prêtres là où on ne les attend pas » (éd. Salvator).
